#creativeHEjam23, 7 June online

People as pebbles, connected, Visual by Chrissi Nerantzi

A Learning Design Agency event in collaboration with the #creativeHE community, 7 June 2023

Dear friends,

The international Creativity for Learning in HE community (#creativeHE) in collaboration with the Learning Design Agency and the e-pizza game team at the University of Leeds are organising this year’s #creativeHE jam.

The event will take place online on Wednesday the 7th of June 2023 between 9.30am and 3pm. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet, explore this year’s theme of creativity from a people centred design lens and celebrate our successes, share our latest creative ideas and experimentations in curriculum and learning design,  teaching practices and identify opportunities for collaboration. During the day, we will also launch the openly licensed e(ducation)-pizza game developed at the University of Leeds by a team of educators and students for curriculum and design conversation.

We are delighted that Professor Jeff Grabill, DVC Student Education at the University of Leeds is joining us together with Dr Cristina Costa, Associate Professor in Education from the Durham University and Iria Lopez, a Senior Consultant in People Centred Design in the Learning Design Agency, at the University of Leeds who will invite us to re-imagine designing higher education for transformative experiences.

A distinct feature of the event is the marketplace. There, educators and students will be able to showcase and demonstrate some of their creative work using a presentation or demonstration format. Please keep in mind that you may only have a few minutes. What you bring is up to you. It could relate to the design process you used to create an imaginative learning activity, a brand-new resource or something else. We very much welcome unusual ideas!

The event is open to all educators and students.

Professor Jeff Grabill is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Education at the University of Leeds. Prior to joining Leeds, Jeff was at Michigan State University where one of his roles was to lead the Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology, facilitating innovation in learning and educator professional development. Jeff is the lead author of the book Design for Change in Higher Education

Dr Cristina Costa is an Associate Professor of Education (Educational and Digital Inequalities) at Durham University. Her research focuses on the intersection between education, inequalities and digital practices. Her recent research has explored themes related to curricular and pedagogical innovations in schools and in higher education and applications of critical digital literacies in these contexts. She has also developed a body of knowledge regarding the experiences of estranged students in higher education – currently co-authoring a book on it to be published with Routledge – as well as critical research methodologies, published through different collections and journal publications.

Iria Lopez is a Senior Professional Design Consultant, specialised in people centred design. She is a CR consultant working in the Learning Design Agency. Originally trained in psychology, her passion for creativity and experimentation led her to the design and innovation field 20 years ago. She has worked for UK Design Council and run projects across sectors and industries (e.g. UK Ministry of Justice, Dept for Education, local councils – community projects, health care sector, social start-ups, etc). She brings a fresh perspective to HE. She is specially interested in cultural change and team dynamics as she believes design-led organisations require a culture that nurtures empathy and creativity.
